Soil Seed Bank Dynamics of Pastures Invaded by Navua Sedge (Cyperus aromaticus) in Tropical North Queensland

چکیده
Navua sedge (Cyperus aromaticus) is threatening crops, pasture species and natural ecosystems in Pacific Island countries northern Queensland, Australia. To aid future management efforts of this exotic invasive weed, research was conducted to understand the soil seed bank dynamics pastures invaded by sedge. Six grazing properties were chosen across two landscapes, coastal inland/upland, with areas that had infestations At each site, collected from depths, 0-5 5-10 cm, plots high low infestation levels It observed varied significantly between these study sites. dominant at all sites contributing 62% 95% total bank, while seeds occupied only 3% 24%. Broadleaf even lower abundance, showing 2% 13% count. The abundance present correlated aboveground biomass (r=0.53, p=0.006), but no correlation found age Based on work, it clear very large concentrated within top cm soil, with, 83% being layer. also noted that, although, higher number than plots, more 18,000 seeds/m 2 still layer regarded as infestation. We suggest insights achieved our may be used devise strategies minimise impact weed critical agricultural areas.

The objective of the study was to characterize annual ryegrass seed population dynamics, managed for natural re-sowing, in no til systems in rotation with soybean, in different chronosequences An area was cultivated for two years with soybean, left as fallow land for the next two years and then cultivated again with soybean for the next two years. The four chronosequences represented different ...
متن کاملSoil seed bank size and composition under Pteridium aquilinum invasion in summer rangelands of Bandpay Babol, Mazandaran province
Pteridium aquilinum is known as an invasive species in different ecosystems of the world. The spread of this species is increasing in the north of Iran particularly outside of forest ecosystems. In this study, the amount and composition of soil seed banks in the dense pathes of Pteridium were investigated in summer rangelands of Bandpay in the south of Babol city in Mazandaran province, Iran...
متن کاملTropical Rainforest Logging in North Queensland: Was It Sustainable?
Timber harvesting from the tropical rainforests of north Queensland ceased following their inscription on the World Heritage List in 1988. The cessation of logging was due to a political ban, not due to exhaustion of the resources. There is no evidence to suggest that logging could not be sustained. Rather, there are growing evidences to suggest that the polycyclic selection system could have s...
متن کاملSeed bank dynamics in five Panamanian forests
Many tropical pioneer species depend on the presence of highseeddensities inthesoil forsuccessful recruitment following canopy disturbance (Cheke et al. 1979, Dalling & Hubbell 2002, Guevara Sada & Gómez Pompa 1972, Whitmore 1983). However determinants of variation in the composition and abundance of soil seed banks remain poorly understood. Seed bank densities can be affected by rates of seed ...
